QUESTION: I have just purchased Sewing A Box Pleat Valance With A Curved Bottom Edge. The picture on the web wage has a satiny fabric trim- but it isn’t mentioned in the instructions. Can you give me some advice on on how to do that? should i create a strip with the same curve shape as the valence, and then attach it? or can it be a straight piece? Im worried a straight piece might pucker up at the curve.

Jenny T. ANSWERS: I’m glad you asked!

It’s easy!

You’ll need strips of fabric cut on the bias.
Cutting on the bias means to cut your fabric at a 45 degree angle, instead straight up or across on the grain.
This bias cut allows the fabric to magically become bendable.

You’ll first need to decide how wide you want the finished trim to be. I like 1″, but I can see how 2 inches or even just 1/2 inch would be nice too.
So, for your finished width, lets call this FW. So, for my trim, FW = 1 inch

The cut width of the strip should twice FW plus 1″. So, for my example the strip should be 3″.

You’ll need the strip to be as long as the cut width of your fabric. You’ll likely need to piece multiple strips together to get to this length.
When you’re done, you’ll have a long strip of fabric that is 3″ wide by the full cut width of your fabric.

Fold the ends in 1/2″ and press.
Fold this strip in half length wise, so that the right side is facing out and press well with an iron. The strip will now only be 11/2 inch thick.

Starting at Chapter 7, step 7.
You will sew the side seams first. NOT the bottom seam yet.
Now, slide the strip in between the lining and fabric. You’ll want the raw edges pointing out and aligning with the valances raw edges. Butt one folded end up against one side seam. Pin the strip along the bottom edge. The strip may seem to bunch up in sharper turns. This is normal.
The strip may be too long. This is also normal. Leave it for now. If it is a little too short, unfold the end a little bit.

Starting on the first end, sew a 1/2″ seam along the bottom edge.
When you reach the end, adjust the folded end of the strip to butt up close to the side seam.

Continue with the instructions.

QUESTION: I’m trying to make a London Shade. I have material for a blackout lining. I’m confused about to piece the lining to the shade. According to your formula I cut the blackout lining fabric to a significantly smaller size than the curtain fabric. The directions say to sew the edges together but the sizes are so different(see first email) I’m not sure how it will work. My question is should the blackout lining be the same size as the curtain fabric? If not can you explain how I sew the lining to the curtain fabric? I’m wondering if I use an interlining in addition to the blackout lining? Is Chapter 6 only applicable to the interlining? Because according to your measurement formula I have a fabric piece that measures 78×51 and a lining that measures 50×51.

Jenny T. ANSWERS: You should not interline AND blackout. It’s way too thick. You can, of course. Just prepare yourself for a very heavy shade.

I see the confusion.

To reduce bulk within the pleats, I believe that’s the reason I wrote it this way. It’s been so long, that I can’t remember why I did this.

So, it’s ok.

The easiest thing to do, will be to pleat your fabric first. Pin the pleats in place up and down your fabric. Then sew the fabric to the lining. Your lining will be flat along the back with no pleats.
This is a cleaner and more professional finish, but admittedly kind of a pain.

If you have lining to spare, the easier way is cut the lining the same width as the face fabric LESS 3″. This will fold the face fabric to the back of the shade for a nicer side view.

QUESTION: I just bought your design for making the boxpleat valance with the rounded bottom. I’m excited- they’re so pretty.
Here’s my problem- I don’t understand first how much lining to get and second how to cut them out.
This is what I’m trying to do. I want to use some old curtain panels for the face of them (they’re the perfect color and style plus I’ll
save a few bucks- though I may have to piece them). The size of the 2 windows I want to do are very different- one is huge and one is not.
The measurements of the windows are: 96″ width and 46″ high and the other is 35″ width and 59″ high
I have four panels of fabric to use: 81.5″ long by 39.5″ wide. Will using them work for my curtains?

Can you give me the exact measurements to cut both curtains based on the size of the windows? I assume the lining would be exactly the same measurements, right? And any extra info on cutting them would be
great.

Thanks so much,
Susan

Jenny T. ANSWERS: To keep the look of your windows consistent, I would try to make the valances the same height.

In fact, if you can install them at the same height, even better. It will give the shorter window the illusion it’s the same size as the taller window.

I would recommend 18″ to 20″ for the finished length.

You didn’t mention the board size you plan on using. When you install the board, the distance from the front edge of the board to the wall is the return. You’ll need this measurement.

The finished panel width (FPW) for the 96″ width = 96 + 48 + return + return.

The finished panel width (FPW) for the 35″ width = 35 + 18 + return + return.

The FPW is the sewn panel width before pleating.

For the 96″ wide window, you will need a piece of fabric that is FPW + 1″ wide

and 20″ + 1/2″ + return

Cut the lining the same.

For the 35″ wide window, you will need a piece of fabric that is FPW + 1″ wide

and 20″ + 1/2″ + return

Cut the lining the same.

So, you have these curtains. The easiest thing to do will be to trim off the hemmed edges. You’ll need to do this to line the fabric.

One panel will work for the smaller window.

You’ll need to piece to panels together for the larger one.

I’m assuming you will be turning the curtains sideways to take advantage of the length.

I hope this helps!

Jenny T.
